Town of Farmington Cemetery Information & Rules
The Town of Farmington maintains its cemeteries as places of respect, remembrance, and reflection. Cemetery lots and graves are available for purchase by individuals who wish to establish a final resting place for themselves or their loved ones. Please contact the Cemetery Sexton, Phil Durrant, to inquire about available sites: 715-281-8747.
Grave Purchases & Ownership
- Cemetery graves are sold only for the burial of human remains and may not be used for any other purpose.
- Each cemetery lot contains two (2) grave sites.
- Each grave site allows:
- One full-body burial and one cremation, or
- Up to two cremations
- The cost is $500 per grave site, which includes perpetual care provided by the Town of Farmington.
- Payments should be made payable to the Town of Farmington. Once payment is received, the Town Clerk will issue a deed for the purchased grave site.
Please note:
- The Town of Farmington does not buy back cemetery lots or graves, and refunds are not provided after purchase.
- If a grave owner no longer needs their grave site, they may relinquish their burial rights by completing a Quit Claim Deed through the Town Clerk. There is no fee to file the Quit Claim Deed; however, it must be notarized.
- Any transfer of ownership must follow the Town’s transfer policy and receive Town approval before the new owner receives rights to the grave site.
Cemetery Care & Decorations
All grave sites include perpetual care, meaning the Town maintains the cemetery grounds. Perpetual care does not include:
- Repair or maintenance of gravestones or monuments.
- Planting or maintaining flowers, shrubs, or other landscaping placed by individuals.
To allow for proper mowing and cemetery maintenance:
- Decorations, flowers, urns, or planters must be placed within 6 inches of the base of the monument and remain in line with the row of monuments.
- Only potted plants, urns, or planters are permitted. Planting flowers, trees, or shrubs directly into the ground is not allowed.
- Seasonal flowers must be removed by October 1st.
- Winter decorations must be removed by April 1st.
- Fragile or breakable items, including glass or ceramic decorations, candle holders, porcelain items, and decorations with glass parts, are prohibited and may be removed by cemetery maintenance.
Monuments & Headstones
- Each grave may have one headstone, marker, or monument.
- All monuments must have a proper solid foundation.
- Military markers must be installed flush with the ground.
- Gravestones and monuments must be installed by a professional monument maker or memorial mason.
- Any additional structures or placements require approval from the Farmington Town Board.
Burial Information
- A concrete, slate, copper, or similar burial vault is required for all full-body burials.
- The Cemetery Sexton must receive notice before any interment.
